Follow the Drinking Gourd

by Jennette Winter

Mary Lyn Ray, Maria Frazee Illust.

“What caterpillar? Eric Carle’s new picture book “The Nonsense Show” – a fresh and hilarious parade of flying fish, cat-taming mice and circus animals freed from all those silly rules – has gotten starred reviews from Kirkus, Booklist and School Library Journal.

In a lively interview, Carle, 86, reflected on a career that has spanned more than 40 years and included 75 books, among them perennial favorites such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?” and “The Grouchy Ladybug.” Carle touched on his art-happy early childhood in the United States, his immigrant parents’ return to Germany when he was 6, and his early career as a graphic designer and art director. He even dished about that beloved caterpillar – the little fellow actually started out as a worm, Carle says.”

All Those Books You’ve Bought but Haven’t Read? There’s a Word for That  Oct. 8, 2018 NYTimes

“The sight of a book you’ve read can remind you of the many things you’ve already learned. The sight of a book you haven’t read can remind you that there are many things you’ve yet to learn. And the sight of a partially read book can remind you that reading is an activity that you hope never to come to the end of.”

by Kevin Mims

“There are some books you can give away and some you just have to keep. Each book becomes precious in its own way; a companion on a sole journey, a friend when sipping afternoon tea and a conscientious traveller when you want to avoid eye contact on public transport.

They send us into galaxies and black holes, help discover hidden islands and languages, cross boundaries and borders and lighten up our imaginations like nothing else. You can never have enough books, even though you may never finish reading them all. Ultimately, its the journey that counts, not the ending.”
