Twas the Night Before School Started

Twas the night before school started

when all through the town

the parents were cheering

By eight the kids were washed

and tucked into bed

when memories of homework

New pencils, new folders, new notebooks too,

Five busy bees on a lovely spring day.

This one said, "Let's fly away.'

This one said "We'll drink some nectar sweet."
This one said, "Let's get pollen on our feet."
This one said "And then we'll make some honey."
This one said "Good thing it's warm and sunny."
So the five busy bees went flying along

The spider weaves a sticky web
To capture bugs to eat.
What keeps the spider's sticky web
From sticking to her feet?

Spider webs are very tricky
Because not all the strands are sticky.
Unlike the passing hapless fly,
The spider knows which strands are dry.

But if she accidentally stands
Upon one of the sticky strands,
She still would not get stuck, you see--

Now That I Can Read

I used to need somebody
To sit and read to me.
I'd look at every page they read
And listen carefully.

But now that I am in first grade,
I'm filling up a shelf
With stories, poems, and other books
That I can read myself.

Five little monkeys swinging in a tree,
Teasing Mr. Alligator, "Hey, you can't catch me."
But along came Mr. Alligator quiet as can be
He snapped a monkey right out of that tree!
(Next verses: 4 little monkeys, 3 little.......,2, 1...)

The last verse for 0:
No little monkeys swinging in a tree
'Cause Mr. Alligator caught them all, you see.
All alone is Mr. Alligator, quiet as can be
With only the wind blowing that tree.

An elephant goes like this and that,
He's terribly big,

One orange alley cat wondering what to do

Along came another cat, And now there are two

"The Pesky Fly"

I once saw a fly in full flight,

It really was quite an odd sight.

It looped up and down

All over the ground.

Not catch it, could I, as I'd liked!

It dived me from up near the light,

Trying to give me a fright.

It just missed my nose

Then skirted my toes.

It seemed like it wanted a fight!

I finished my food in one bite,

The fly I just kept in my sight.

I opened the door,

Hoping he'd soar,

Off into the darkness of night.

But the fly, he just stayed at my height,

Buzzing around like a kite.

So I ran outside,

The fly also tried,

And behind him I closed the door tight.

So here we are both in the bright

Lamp that's outside shining white.

And then in a flash,

I knew in my dash,

I'd forgotten my key, that's not right!

A little garden flower

Is lying in its bed.

A warm spring sun

Is shining overhead.

Down come the raindrops

Dancing to and fro.

The little flower awakens

And starts to grow.

5 Little Instruments

Rhymes

5 Little Instruments were having lots of fun.

Making silly noises and playing one by one.

First we heard the saxophone with a melody so sweet.

The music that the sax played nearly knocked me off my feet.

When the sax was finished he headed for the door leaving four little instruments having lots of fun.

Then we heard the trumpet make a sound so clear and true.

Toot-Toot-Biddily Boo-Whoop-Whoop-De Do-

When that trumpet had finished he twirled round like a bee leaving three little instruments having lots of fun.

Making silly noises and playing one by one.

Next came the drums with a thundering, pounding, roar.

The sounds that came from that drum set my feet dancing once more.

Bop-Bop- a-whee-Bop-Bop bop e do-

The drum played and played until there were just two.

Two little instruments are having lots of fun.

Making silly noises and playing one by one.

Suddenly the tambourine chimed in to play the song.

The people started clapping and tapping right along.

That tambourine played all night long until we saw the sun.

Be bop- a doobie wop- cha cha now there’s one.

One little instrument having lots of fun

He adds the final Be-bop and now the song is done.

Poetry & Phonics

Suggestion:

A fun way of teaching phonics is through poetry.

Teaching Phonemic Awareness Using Poetry- By Babs Bell Hajdusiewicz

Reading skills are taught simultaneously: story structure, phonics, and vocabulary. Repeated readings support fluency, and auditory discrimination. Above all, poetry reading develops confidence because the reader is supported by repetition, rhythm, rhyme, and brevity.

Place poems on charts and some run off as hand outs. Vary your approach. If you letter the poem on a chart, highlight the phonetic element you are working with. Isolate the words and have them listen to the words that are high lighted. What do they have in common? Practice pronouncing the words with the specific sound.

Reverse the procedure; run off copies of the poem and have the children find words with a specific phonetic element and high-light the words. If you are going to use the poem to review a different phonetic element, have children use a different highlighter. For headache prevention, I purchase the highlighters.

Flash the poem onto the white board. With the computer/projector, highlight words as the students discover them. Make the marks on the white board, not on the transparency. It wipes off more easily.

Rereading poems is a good reinforcement and more enjoyable than drilling of isolated words.
