Electronic /Digital Books
example of what can be done at home and in the classroom to make stories available.
Scaredy Squirrel was purchased via iTunes under Book Search in a matter of minutes.
When Jeanine was asked what she was reading to her children she immediately took an iPad, downloaded a story and read it. Spontaneously the Flip started recording- nothing was planned.
The dramatic, creative reading was posted because it can serve as an incentive to be expressive. Listening to digital stories can develop the sense of story structure. Listening and following along with the text encourages fluency as well as reading above one’s readability level.
Earphones can be used with the iPad to listen to digital books while the teacher is busy with another guided reading group.
When teachers read to their class, they may want to think of recording the reading - or place a camcorder on a tri-pod for a video. Those stories can then be made available for the students in the Learning Center, classroom library and even UTube. Because the recording of Scaredy Squirrel was too large to place on this page I placed it on UTube which is a free service.
